Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d), the Honourable Mark Phillips underscored Guyana’s unwavering commitment to enhancing electrification through renewable energy during today’s CARICOM Regional Kilo Walk which started and ended at the CARICOM Secretariat in Turkeyen.
The event, which commemorates CARICOM ENERGY MONTH 2023, was organised by the CARICOM Secretariat, Guyana Energy Agency and the Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE) to promote renewables under the theme “Accelerating Innovation and Driving Electrification”.
Prime Minister Phillips said that the Government remains steadfast in its promise to achieve low-carbon energy and advance a clean energy transition. “We are committed to bridging the energy divide, not only on the coastland but also in the hinterland, ensuring that energy reaches the people in the communities where they live.”
He highlighted several transformative renewable energy projects underway, including the 30,000 solar household energy system, which will distribute 160 watts of energy to each household, targeting approximately 140,000 Guyanese in the hinterland and riverine areas.
Additionally, he spoke about the mini hydro projects in Kumu and Moco Moco in Lethem; solar installations in communities like Leguan, Wakenaam, Bartica, Mahdia and Lethem; while noting investments in electric vehicle charging infrastructure across multiple regions to enable clean transportation.
Prime Minister Phillips urged all Guyanese to become “energy champions” in homes, schools, workplaces, and communities to enable sustainable development.
Head of the Guyana Energy Agency, Dr Mahender Sharma; Deputy Secretary General of CARICOM, Dr Armstrong Alexis; Members of the Diplomatic Corps; officials from the CARICOM Secretariat and representatives from the respective agencies were also at today’s walk.
