In a proactive move aimed at bolstering national security, Guyana is set to significantly increase investments in its military capabilities. General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, announced during a weekly press conference that additional funds would be directed towards enhancing defense capabilities in collaboration with international allies, as reflected in the upcoming 2024 budget.
Dr. Jagdeo emphasized that the primary goal is to strengthen Guyana’s security apparatus for defensive purposes, clarifying that there are no aggressive intentions, including against Venezuela. He pointed to recent discussions between Presidents Dr. Irfaan Ali and Nicolas Maduro at the Argyle International Airport, where a commitment to peace and the “Argyle Declaration” addressing border controversies was made.
The General Secretary stressed that Guyana’s engagement with international partners is solely aimed at building defensive capacity. He dismissed any suggestions of aggressive intentions, assuring that the focus is on safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty.
Defending the increased investment, Dr. Jagdeo highlighted the economic impact, citing losses of over $100 million annually due to illegal fishing in Guyana’s exclusive economic zone. The allocated funds will support the purchase of radar and interception capabilities to police the exclusive economic zone and assert sovereignty over the nation’s territory.
The General Secretary reiterated that the strategic approach aligns with international norms, emphasizing a defensive posture. The increased budget allocation for defense underscores the PPP/C government’s commitment to fortifying the nation’s security infrastructure in collaboration with international partners.
