Police are investigating a deadly armed robbery that occurred at the Port Mourant Market on the morning of October 26, 2024, leaving one bandit dead and another on the run. The attack targeted a 31-year-old goldsmith who operates a jewelry stall within the market.
Initial reports indicate that around 9:15 a.m., the goldsmith was approached by two armed men-one wielding a cutlass and the other a handgun. The deceased bandit, identified as 18-year-old Parmand Pertab, also known as “Mikey,” of Hampshire Village, Corentyne, reportedly lashed the goldsmith’s employee multiple times with the cutlass, causing injuries.
The second suspect, armed with a handgun, demanded that the goldsmith and his employee lie on the ground. Complying with the threat, they watched helplessly as the robbers filled a blue bag with gold and silver jewelry before attempting to flee the scene on foot.
As the bandits made their escape, the goldsmith raised an alarm, prompting vendors and shoppers in the market to intervene. In a desperate attempt to evade capture, the armed suspect fired three shots into the crowd, hitting one man in his right leg and left thigh. Despite this, several brave citizens managed to disarm “Mikey” and retrieve the stolen jewelry.
Pertab sustained multiple injuries during the confrontation and collapsed at the scene.
Both he and the injured bystander, identified as Mark Lovell, were rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital. Pertab was pronounced dead while receiving medical treatment. Lovell, who was treated for gunshot wounds, later discharged himself from the hospital.
Police examined Pertab’s body and found one chop wound to his right hand and two to his upper back. His body has since been taken to Ramoo Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination is pending.
All of the stolen jewelry has been recovered and accounted for. Police are continuing their investigation into the incident, and the search for the second suspect is ongoing.
