A significant number of Guyanese gathered for a mental health awareness walk, aimed at highlighting the importance of maintaining sound mental health and cognitive faculties. This event, named the ‘Glow for Mental Health Walk,’ predominantly attracted young participants and was organized around the theme of ‘Creating Hope Through Action.’
Notably, Advisor to the Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, was present at the event. Dr. Ramsammy underscored the persistent challenge of mental health in Guyana while encouraging the youth to play a leading role in raising awareness and changing the prevailing realities.
In his address, Dr. Ramsammy emphasized that mental health issues encompass more than just conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. He pointed out that the stress of everyday life and the ability to cope with it can lead to various mental health problems. Furthermore, he revealed that a significant portion of individuals with depression remains untreated, with one in every eight people experiencing some form of mental health issue.
Dr. Ramsammy stressed the urgent need for immediate treatment and support for those dealing with conditions such as depression and anxiety. He asserted that the event was a message signaling the imperative for change in this regard.
Over the past week, the placement of 25 green benches in schools has begun, creating safe spaces where individuals with mental health concerns can seek assistance. Dr. Ramsammy explained that these benches and spaces are meant to convey to young people that help is available within their schools and throughout the community.
UNICEF Deputy Representative for Guyana and Suriname, Irfan Akhtar, also participated in the walk. He emphasized the importance of making mental health issues a topic of discussion within families and not solely within the purview of medical professionals and clinics. The event aimed to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and foster an environment that promotes good mental health and well-being for all, especially children. Akhtar highlighted that every child has a right to good mental health and well-being.
