A tragic fire of unknown origin claimed the lives of 52-year-old teacher Haywattie Bahudur and her husband, 57-year-old bus driver Hansraj Narine, at Lot 1A Hydronie, East Bank Essequibo. The incident occurred at approximately 1:45 am today (February 9, 2025).
Investigators from Regional Division #3 are currently probing the cause of the fire, which completely destroyed the couple’s home, a flat concrete structure situated in a fenced yard.
According to reports, police officers responded to a 911 call at about 2:00 am. Upon arriving at the scene, they found the house already engulfed in flames. Firefighters from the Leonora Fire Station, led by Sub-Officer Fraser, were dispatched with Fire Tenders #84 and #81. Despite their efforts, the fire had already gutted the entire structure by the time it was extinguished.
The bodies of Bahudur and Narine, along with a dog, were discovered in the northern section of the house. The remains were subsequently transported to the Ezekiel Funeral Home by undertakers.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
