The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security has launched an investigation into the discovery of unauthorized and counterfeit Old Age Pension books, which have compromised the integrity of the pension delivery system. In response, Minister of Human Services requested the Guyana Police Force to investigate the matter immediately.
As a result of the ongoing investigation, the regular early distribution of Old Age Pension books has been delayed. To address these concerns, the Ministry announced that the 2025 Old Age Pension books are currently being printed with enhanced security features to prevent tampering and falsification. Distribution of the new books is set to begin in December 2024, with efforts underway to align their distribution with the encashment of December 2025 vouchers. A detailed schedule of distribution dates and times will be shared across all media platforms.
Additionally, the Ministry disclosed that 3,000 more 2024 Old Age Pension books, also featuring upgraded security measures, will be available starting November 25, 2024. These are intended for pensioners who have not yet received their 2024 books.
The Ministry highlighted a significant increase in the number of pensioners, which has risen to over 70,000 in the last three years. In light of this, pensioners are encouraged to use the banking system for pension payments. Deposits are made directly to bank accounts within the first five days of each month, eliminating the need for pension books altogether.
The Ministry expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the delays but emphasized the critical importance of enhancing the integrity and accountability of the pension delivery system to safeguard pensioners’ benefits.
The findings of the Guyana Police Force’s investigation into the fake pension books are still pending. The Ministry reiterated its commitment to ensuring a secure and reliable system for all pensioners moving forward.
