His Excellency President Dr. Irfaan Ali has hailed the inauguration of the largest Lord Shiva Murti in South America, located at the Badrinaath Ashram in Spring Garden, Essequibo Coast, as a significant moment in Guyana’s history and the evolution of Hinduism in the country.
Speaking to a large gathering at the inauguration ceremony on Wednesday afternoon, President Ali emphasized the importance of such investments in fostering community, faith, and selflessness—values deeply rooted in Hinduism. He also reaffirmed his Government’s commitment to supporting pandits, pastors, and imams across the country, recognizing faith and spirituality as key pillars of national development.

Also attending the ceremony was Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d), the Honourable Mark Phillips, along with Cabinet Ministers and other Government officials.
Prime Minister Phillips described the historic Pran Pratishtha ceremony—which saw the consecration of the towering statue—as a testament to faith and cultural identity. He reflected on Lord Shiva’s enduring legacy, stating, “He is the destroyer of evil, the embodiment of meditation and wisdom. His presence here in such a grand form symbolizes religious devotion, the pursuit of truth, and the resilience of faith.”
The Prime Minister lauded the vision and dedication of those who made the project possible, calling it a monument to Guyana’s diverse cultural heritage. He further underscored the importance of religious tolerance and unity, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to freedom of worship.

“Guyana is our shared home, built by people of different backgrounds, faiths, and histories. As we celebrate this milestone for the Hindu community, we also celebrate a vital part of our national identity,” he noted.
Emphasizing the broader significance of development, Prime Minister Phillips reminded the audience that progress is not only about roads, infrastructure, and trade, but also about preserving culture and strengthening the values that bind Guyanese together.
