The police were called to the New Amsterdam Market area on Saturday morning after the lifeless body of a man was discovered in an alleyway opposite the market.
At approximately 07:00 hrs, an unidentified caller contacted the Region Six Regional Operations Room, reporting that a man was seen lying motionless near the busy commercial zone. Police responded promptly and arrived at the scene—an alleyway located between Payless Variety Store, China Supermarket, and a nearby gas station at 14 Strand Street, New Amsterdam.
Upon arrival, ranks discovered the motionless body of a man later identified as Tyrone April, a 49-year-old Guyanese of African descent. April, who was of no fixed place of abode, was found lying on his back with both hands crouched to his chest. He was dressed in camouflage brown pants and grey and white sneakers.
A preliminary examination revealed partially healed scars, believed to be from recent injuries, on both knees and elbows. However, there were no visible marks of violence on his body. Reports indicate that April was a known heavy consumer of alcohol and suffered from epilepsy.
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) from the Ministry of Health attached to the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital were summoned to the scene. The body was later transported to the hospital, where he was officially pronounced dead on arrival.
April’s body is presently at the Arokium Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
The discovery has stirred concern among vendors and shoppers in the area, many of whom recognized the deceased as a familiar figure often seen around the market.
An investigation is ongoing.
