A Patentia, West Bank Demerara man has landed in troubled waters after he tried to provide some “contraband” relief to his friend, Tomar McGarrel who is incarcerated.
Officials of the Guyana Prisons Service arrested him on Monday afternoon while he attempted to smuggle 24.01 grams of cannabis into the Lusignan Prison.
Teron Cameron, 25, found a way to package the drugs under his pair of slippers. Unfortunately for him, prison officials who were suspicious decided to check the footwear out of curiousity and in the process found a quantity of seeds, leaves, and stems suspected of cannabis.
He was subsequently arrested and is expected to appear in court soon.
Meanwhile, Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, praised the officers for their awareness.
Only Saturday last, the Prison Head during his quarterly muster and general inspection of officers, advised prison officers at the location to remain alert and observant while on duty while noting that all the correctional facilities face formidable threats from contraband smuggling.
The Prison Director said that while there is increased monitoring and surveillance at all prison locations, over the past weeks it was observed that several attempts were made by members of the public to smuggle contraband into the various prison facilities.
This, he said, continues to pose significant challenges to the service. However, he warned that there will be no letup in bringing down corrupt officers and family members of inmates who are bent on breaking the law.
