Agriculture Minister Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha inaugurated a demonstration farm at Tarlogie on the Corentyne, setting a foundation for farmers and students to harness advanced farming and management techniques to boost productivity.
Highlighting a revitalized passion for agriculture, Minister Mustapha expressed that the farm offers a unique platform for learning and innovation across sectors such as cattle rearing, cash crops, and aquaculture.
“Once we can do that,” he stated, “we can leave a legacy in this country where we will have food security, and that is important to each and every one of us… I want this model farm here where school children can come here regularly, where farmers will be coming here regularly, because all the crops that we are growing in our country, especially the new crops that we have embarked on – things like corn, soya, the high-value crops, carrot, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce – you name it, those are the crops I want people to come here and learn to grow.”
With this vision, the Minister emphasized that local crop production will empower farmers to meet the rising demand from Guyana’s growing hospitality industry.
Region Six Chairman David Armogan lauded the initiative, recognizing the government’s commitment to the region’s agricultural advancement. He encouraged farmers and students to maximize the potential of the facility. Regional Vice Chairman Zamal Hussain and other officials joined the event, reinforcing their dedication to building a resilient agricultural future for Guyana.
