Months after fleeing the scene of a deadly hit-and-run accident, police have captured the man accused of killing a nine-month-old baby and seriously injuring her teenage parents in Berbice.
In a targeted, intelligence-led operation conducted on Tuesday between 18:00 hrs and 18:30 hrs, ranks attached to the Springlands Police Station arrested 32-year-old Avinash Naidoo at Line Path, Corentyne. Naidoo had been on the run since March 2, 2025, after he allegedly struck down a young family traveling on an electric bike and fled the scene without rendering assistance.

The tragic accident claimed the life of nine-month-old Eli Surujnarine and her 19-year-old mother, Kavita Bedesee, who succumbed to her injuries just days later. The child’s father, 17-year-old Tushan Surujnarine, was also injured but has since recovered and was discharged from hospital.
According to police investigations, Tushan was riding the electric cycle with his partner and baby along the western side of Line Path Road when they were rear-ended by a white Fielder wagon. The impact threw all three occupants onto the roadway, leaving them unconscious.
They were rushed to the Skeldon Public Hospital before being transferred to the New Amsterdam and later Georgetown Public Hospital. Baby Eli died the following day, on March 3, while her mother succumbed days later, deepening the family’s grief.
The vehicle involved in the accident was later found, but Naidoo had gone into hiding—until his arrest this week. He was taken to the Springlands Police Station, where he remains in custody as investigations continue.
Naidoo is expected to face charges for causing death by dangerous driving and fleeing the scene of an accident.
