The Government has injected millions through the provision of resources to the people of Moraikobai to boost production and improve their livelihood.
Among the investments made to the community by the Government is the procurement of a mini excavator and a front-end loader which were handed over to the Moraikobai Village Council earlier today.
Minister of Finance Dr. Ashni Singh after commissioning the two machines noted that the machines were purchased following a commitment made by President Irfaan Ali when the National Toshao Council was resuscitated and $3 B was given to the council for developmental projects within each Amerindian communities across the country.
From that amount, Moraikobai benefited from $46 M dollars which was used to purchase the two machines while the remainder will be used to start upgrade the trail linking Moraikobai with Linden.
Additionally, Moraikobai is also benefiting from the Low Carbon Development Strategy through the sale of carbon credits of which the community would have received an allocation of $35M from which $17 M has been used to finance a number of critical economic ventures aimed at earning food security in the village.
One of which he said will see “Things like the cassava cultivation project, ensuring that the village has functioning cassava mill and to ensuring ultimately that the village is able to cultivate, harvest and process cassava into finish products such as casereep, cassava flour, cassava bread etc for export.”
According to Minister Singh, there are several interventions to ensure connectivity of Moraikobai village where resources have already been allocated to finance the construction of a barge that the village will be using to transport goods in and out of the village.
Resources were also provided for the construction of an Information Communication Technology ICT hub, upgrading the tourism capability of the village, storage bond and upgrade to the village council office among others.
“And so there are a number of interventions that we are financing through multiple initiatives of ours Government aimed at ensuring that Moraikobai has a dynamic and competitive village economy that is able to harness and mobilize its strategic location on the Mahaicony River in the internet and wellbeing of the Moraikobai people.”
He said similar interventions are being replicated throughout the other Amerindian villages across the country.
