A tragic river accident on Friday, April 11, 2025, in the vicinity of De Veldt Village, Berbice River, has claimed the life of 30-year-old Kayandra Lindie, a mother of two and resident of Cumberland Village, East Canje, Berbice.
The mishap occurred at approximately 05:45 hrs and involved a passenger boat operated by 34-year-old Aldwayn Den Hart of Sand Hills Village, Berbice River. The vessel, a 25-foot blue wooden boat powered by a 150-horsepower Yamaha outboard engine is registered to carry 11 adults and two children.
Onboard at the time of the incident were Kayandra Linde (now deceased), boat captain Aldwayn Den Hart, Michael Tappin (27, of One Mile Extension, Linden), Naomi Walcott (25, of South Sophia, Georgetown), Harlington Bell (7, of Sand Hills Village), Gladis Bender (a minor), and a man known only as “Maffie,” whose full particulars are still unknown.
According to Den Hart, the boat departed Sand Hills en route to New Amsterdam. While navigating near De Veldt Village, he reportedly felt an impact near the engine area, after which the vessel capsized.
Nearby residents rushed to assist and were able to rescue six of the seven passengers from the water. Sadly, Kayandra Linde was found unresponsive. Emergency services were summoned, and Linde, along with Tappin, Walcott, and Den Hart, was transported to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. There, Dr. Julier pronounced Linde dead. The others were treated and remain under observation in the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are under active investigation by the relevant authorities, who have since traveled to the scene to conduct further inquiries.
This heartbreaking incident has left a community in mourning and a family grieving the untimely loss of a young mother. Updates will follow as investigations continue.
