The Guyana Fire Service is continuing its investigation into a fire that completely destroyed a two-story wooden and concrete building on Main Street, New Amsterdam, on Sunday.
The News Desk understands that the building was allegedly set on fire twice in separate incidents on the same day.
Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald revealed that the first call was received at approximately 12:33 p.m. Firefighters rushed to the scene and found smoke and flames coming from the ground floor. They quickly extinguished the blaze and prevented it from spreading to nearby structures, including a hotel and the Nalico/Nafico buildings.
Shortly after, the fire service received another report that the same building was on fire again, this time originating from the second floor. Upon arrival, the crew discovered the structure fully engulfed in flames, once again threatening nearby buildings. The team managed to contain and extinguish the fire, preventing further damage.
The destroyed building was reportedly being occupied by vagrants.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances behind the incidents.
