Residents of New Amsterdam will benefit from improved services being offered by the New Amsterdam Mayor and Town Council in the area of garbage collection following the commissioning of the first of three compactor trucks earlier today.
The council was able to procure the machines by using funds from its 2022 subvention received from central Government last year.
Speaking at the simple commissioning exercise, Deputy Mayor, Wainwright McIntosh disclosed that the new machine will assist in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the council as it related to solid waste management within the town.
He said the truck will begin works in several East Bank of Berbice communities where the bins of residents there will be serviced.
“And so we would like citizens to ensure that you have to garbage receptacles in your yard as a matter of fact it is council policy which stipulates that every home should be having a garbage receptacle so at council’s service, these garbage receptacles will be service very frequently“ he added.
The Deputy Mayor noted that the compactor truck will complement the services being offered by a canter that the council has been using prior to the procurement of the compactor.
He revealed that the council is challenged with hiring drivers and laborers to work in the health and sanitation department and is therefore encouraging persons to submit their applications.
