The distribution of cash grants under the Sustainable Livelihood and Entrepreneurial Development (SLED) Programme continued today, focusing on individuals who missed the initial distribution exercise earlier this year and those whose cheques contained errors, such as incorrect spelling of names.
The distribution exercise, held at the Berbice High School, was led by Senior Minister within the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance and Public Service, Dr. Ashni Singh, and Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Anand Persaud. They were accompanied by Regional Vice Chairman Zamal Hussain and Regional Executive Officer Narindra Persaud.
Minister Persaud clarified that this grant is distinct from the $100,000 cash transfer scheduled to be distributed in 2024 to Guyanese aged 18 and older. He emphasized that the SLED grant is specifically aimed at assisting Guyanese in starting, improving, or expanding their businesses. While the initial distribution began earlier this year, challenges such as name misspellings delayed some disbursements.
“This initiative reflects the commitment of the President Irfaan Ali-led administration to improving the lives of all Guyanese, regardless of race or location,” Minister Persaud stated.
Recipients were encouraged to use the funds effectively, contributing to sustainable development and entrepreneurial growth. Minister Persaud added, “It is a season for sharing and giving… this season, use this $100 wisely.”
Today’s exercise saw 774 individuals with corrected cheques receiving their $100,000 grants, while 357 individuals who missed the initial distribution were able to collect their cheques. The initiative is expected to positively impact communities by fostering economic growth and development.
