The Ministry of Education has expanded its distribution of digital TV boxes to Region Six, with over 1,200 units currently being provided to parents of school-aged children. The initiative is aimed at improving access to six dedicated educational channels developed by the Guyana Learning Channel (GLC) for students of all age groups.
During a media engagement, Director of the Guyana Learning Channel, Anieshaw Mohamed, explained that the initiative was first launched in Region Three in March and has since been rolled out across all other regions, with the exception of Region Ten and Georgetown, where distribution is expected to begin shortly.

Mohamed highlighted the significance of the digital TV boxes, noting that, “We are the very first TV station in the Caribbean that has gone fully digital. These six channels—GLC Junior, Elementary, Elevate, Discover, Plus, and Teen—are designed to cater to learners at various stages of their academic journey.” She further explained that the channels operate under the NTSC standard, which is currently used in Guyana.
Importantly, the digital TV box is not a WiFi-enabled device. Instead, it functions as a converter, allowing non-digital televisions to receive digital, over-the-air signals. This enables households without smart TVs to still access the six learning channels provided by the Ministry of Education.
To date, over 9,000 digital TV boxes have been distributed nationwide, with more expected to be delivered in the coming weeks as part of the Ministry’s broader effort to support distance education and equal access to learning resources.
