Police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred at around 20:19 hrs last night (Monday 22nd January 2024) on the Den Amstel public road, West Coast Demerara, which resulted in the death of a 34-year-old pedal cyclist.
The accident involved a motor lorry (GTT 4953), driven by a 24-year-old from Meten-Meer-Zorg, WCD, and pedal cyclist Joel Castang (now deceased), a 34-year-old from Lot 55 Hibiscus Scheme Blankengburg, WCD.
Investigations so far disclosed that the lorry was proceeding West along the southern side of the public road when the pedal cyclist rode from South to North across the road causing the lorry driver to swerve right. In the process, the front of the lorry collided with the pedal cyclist who fell under the lorry and was dragged some distance away. The motionless body of the pedal cyclist was picked up and escorted to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where the body was seen and examined by a doctor and pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
The body is at the Ezekiel Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination. A breathalyzer test was conducted on the Lorry driver and no trace of alcohol was found. The driver is in custody assisting Police with the ongoing investigation.
