Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at approximately 23:30 hours on the Letterkenny Public Road, Corentyne Berbice. The collision involved motor car #PSS 9882, driven by 24-year-old Brian Mahadeo of Hampshire Village, Corentyne Berbice, and pedestrian Jermaine Fraser, a 48-year-old resident of Auchlyne Village, Corentyne Berbice.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a motor lorry was stationary on the northern footpath of the road, facing east. Fraser was reportedly standing near the lorry’s right front door when the motor car, traveling west along the southern drive lane at an alleged high speed, collided with him as he attempted to cross the road. The car’s right front struck Fraser, causing him to fall onto the road and sustain injuries.
Fraser was picked up in an unconscious state by public-spirited citizens and transported to the Port Mourant Public Hospital. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival by the doctor on duty.
The motor car involved in the accident has been lodged for examination by a Licensing and Certifying Officer. A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver revealed readings of 68 and 62 micrograms, exceeding the legal limit. The driver remains in custody as investigations continue.
The body of the deceased is currently at Ramoo’s Funeral Parlor, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
