The Police in Regional Division #3 are investigating a break and enter and larceny where $2.3M were removed from the premises of a businessman.
According to the police, the incident took place between yesterday and today. However, the suspect has been arrested and the cash recovered.
The News Desk understands that the businessman reported to the police that a total of $2.3M was carted off after his business premises was closed on June 5th. At 06 hours 50 on the 6th, an employee reported to the premises for work and discovered the bathroom window was pushed up on the lower flat of the building.
The employee then entered the storeroom, where he discovered the window and the door for the storeroom were also opened. Further checks discovered that the cash missing after which the police were called in and CCTV footage was reviewed which captured the theft.
As investigations got underway during which the police went to the home of a 23-year-old suspect where searches were carried out in his home but nothing was found. He was later arrested and escorted to Parika Police Station as investigations continued.
However, at about 18 hours today, the suspect confessed to police that he had indeed committed the offense and then led police to a home located at Hubu, East Bank Essequibo where he showed them a black plastic bag hidden in a washing machine. Inside the bag police discovered a quantity of cash which was taken to the Parika Police Station, where the bag was opened in his presence, and the cash was counted and same amounted to $2,120,000.
The recovered cash was lodged and the suspect remains in custody assisting with investigations.
