The Regional Democratic Council (RDC) officially handed over a $6 million specialized minibus today to the New Amsterdam Psychiatric Hospital. The vehicle, outfitted with wheelchair ramps and other specialized features, is designed to facilitate safe and comfortable transportation for patients, particularly those in wheelchairs.
Regional Executive Officer Narindra Persaud noted that this investment was long overdue, highlighting its vital role in enhancing healthcare services in the region. He explained that the new vehicle will allow medical professionals to conduct home visits and transport patients to and from the facility more effectively.
Dr. Meena Rajkumar, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, expressed her gratitude and excitement, underscoring that a lack of suitable transportation has contributed to overcrowding at the facility, as many patients could not return to their communities.
“Many patients come from as far as Parika, Linden, or Crabwood Creek, often accompanied by the police. Once discharged, they often have no means to get home. This vehicle will make that transition much smoother, allowing us to easily reunite patients with their families and communities,” Dr. Rajkumar explained.
Dr. Rajkumar also noted a reduction in chronic cases at the hospital. “We treat patients when they come with acute cases, help them recover, and send them back to their communities. If crises arise, they are always welcome to be readmitted.”
Regional Chairman David Armogan and Regional Vice Chairman Zamal Hussain were also present at the simple yet significant handover ceremony. They highlighted the minibus’s positive impact on patient care and emphasized its valuable contribution to the hospital’s mission.
