The Police in Berbice are make every efforts in determining who is the mastermind that is responsible for the robbery that left one security guard injured and close to $50M that was expected to be used to pay ten day workers missing.
So far, the driver of the getaway car has been arrested. He allegedly told detectives that he was hijacked by the armed men along with additional information that would have assisted with solving the crime but the information was reportedly not recorded via video or audio. Another male who was also apprehend late yesterday was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital in a critical condition just after mid-day today. He was attacked by bees and allegedly shot by the police before he surrendered.
thenewsdeskgy.com understands that the police are working together with the Regional Democratic Council to clear bushes in the area where the men had fled while several staff members are being questioned in relation to the crime. Their cellular phones are also being analyzed for any suspicious activities.
At about 03 hours on Wednesday, one of the security guards who has been identified as 60-year-old Suresh Sooknanan was on duty at the Regional Democratic Council at a Guard Hut located on the Eastern side of the compound when four unidentifiable men came into the compound from the eastern fence and dealt him one lash to his forehead with an object, causing him to receive injuries.
Sooknanan was viciously attacked, tied up, had duct-taped placed over his mouth by the armed men who forced their way into the building through a door that was heavily grilled behind the RDC compound. Three other guards who were securing the building from the front at the time of the attack were only made aware of the incident when the victim approached them and told them of what took place.
The police were immediately informed but by the time they arrived at the scene, the armed bandits had already escaped with close to $50M in cash which was supposed to be used to pay the ten day workers in the region on Wednesday. The money was taken to the Regional Democratic Council the day before.
Several hours later, gunshots rang out at Heatburn on the East Bank of Berbice and as residents ventured outside to investigate, they notice police chasing a motor car which was later abandoned on the roadway after one of the occupants was fatally shot to the head and the other fled on foot. The driver of the motor car was apprehended soon after while another accomplice surrendered after being attacked by bees.
Investigations are ongoing.
