Police in Region Six have so far failed to make any meaningful headway in the investigation into the brutal killing of 61-year-old Chinese national and businessman Chen Yongping of Cumberland Village, East Canje, Berbice, as public concern grows over the apparent silence of Divisional Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus.
Repeated attempts by The News Desk to contact Commander Bacchus for updates on the horrific crime have proven futile. Calls placed to his phone and questions sent via WhatsApp have gone unanswered, despite indications that the commander was online. His refusal to engage the media has raised serious concerns about transparency and accountability in a case that has shaken the Region Six community.
The last official update from Commander Bacchus was issued on Monday, several hours after the incident, when he stated that no arrests had been made and that the matter was “under investigation.” Since then, there has been no further communication from the division, even as days pass without visible progress.
The News Desk understands that police removed a memory card containing CCTV footage from the scene for review. However, to date, no information has been disclosed regarding any findings from that footage, nor whether it has yielded leads in identifying the perpetrators.
On Monday, December 22, 2025, at about 05:00 hrs, at Lot 21, Cumberland Village, East Canje, Berbice, 61-year-old Chinese businessman, Chen Yongping, was brutally killed while, 32-year-old Chinese businessman, Chen Dongrong of the same address sustained injuries during a robbery.
Initial investigations revealed that the two men left Cumberland Village at approximately 03:00 hrs for the Port Mourant Market on the Corentyne. Upon returning home, they were reportedly pounced upon by two identifiable males, armed with knives.
During the robbery, the assailants made off with one iPhone 12 Pro Max, valued at $322,000, and an undetermined sum of cash belonging to the deceased$150,000 in cash and one iPhone 12 Pro Max, valued at $342,000, belonging to Chen Dongrong
Both victims sustained multiple injuries and stab wounds and were rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital for treatment. Chen Yongping succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical care. Chen Dongrong, who suffered a fractured skull, was initially admitted to Ward 8 and was later discharged.
As the investigation drags on with no arrests and little public communication, residents and business owners in East Canje continue to express fear and frustration, calling for decisive action and clearer updates from law enforcement.
