The Regional Democratic Council (RDC) in Region Six held its annual Diwali celebration on Wednesday, marked by a vibrant cultural program within the RDC compound. Staff members participated enthusiastically, performing poems, songs, and showcasing traditional Diwali attire, while heads of departments shared Diwali greetings.
Regional Chairman David Armogan extended Diwali wishes to the staff and encouraged self-reflection, reminding everyone that the festival of lights is a time for inner purification. “Even though we might appear bright on the outside, there are many dark qualities that we all possess,” Armogan reflected.
“Diwali is a time to dispel those qualities and bring into our lives the light that Mother Lakshmi provides. It is a time where light should triumph over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and we should embrace each other’s religions, cultures, and beliefs, and function as one.”
Armogan also conveyed Diwali greetings on behalf of President Irfaan Ali, the Cabinet of Ministers, and the leadership of the People’s Progressive Party, wishing all Guyanese a joyous celebration. “May the blessings of Mother Lakshmi be with each of you,” he added.
Regional Executive Officer Narindra Persaud echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of fostering unity through the “One Guyana” initiative, while Regional Vice Chairman Zamal Hussain joined in the celebrations, supporting the council’s Diwali observance.
Adding to the festivities was a Rangoli competition that highlighted the artistic talents across various departments within the RDC. The Department of Education’s team emerged as the winner, with the Registry/Personnel Department securing second place. The Rangoli entries were judged on creativity, color use, and cultural representation, showcasing the staff’s dedication to traditional Diwali artistry.
Prizes were presented by Regional Chairman David Armogan, Regional Vice Chairman Zamal Hussain, and Regional Executive Officer Narindra Persaud, celebrating the talent and spirit displayed by all participants.
The RDC’s Diwali program underscored the council’s commitment to cultural diversity and unity, reflecting the region’s shared values and mutual respect for all beliefs.
