A 32-year-old, Terrence Bascom endured a terrifying ordeal at his home in Reliance, East Canje, Berbice, during the early hours of Thursday, January 16, 2025.
Bascom recounted that he was asleep when, around 2:30 a.m., he was awake by the sound of someone attempting to break into his home. “We heard someone wrenching the door. After he couldn’t get access, he started hitting on the windows. He then tried another door and wrenched it out, but he couldn’t get in because I have grills,” Bascom said.
Overwhelmed by fear, Bascom was unable to alert his neighbors. “I was so traumatized; I couldn’t believe this was happening to me. My friend asked for a cutlass, but I was so disoriented I couldn’t even think where it was.”
The intruder, who Bascom believes is a known bandit in the area, eventually turned his attention to a parked car in the yard. “He jumped on the car and started hitting the windshield, which alerted the neighbors. By then, he got access to the car and stole approximately $300,000 in cash and important documents,” Bascom explained.
The police were summoned but reportedly took 45 minutes to arrive. Bascom later realized his wallet was also missing after the officers left. He further revealed that this was not the first incident involving the same individual. “It’s a well-known bandit. Every time the police catch him, they take him to the psychiatric hospital for two days, and then he’s back out.”
Still shaken by the experience, Bascom expressed his fear of confronting the intruder, who could have caused harm. “I don’t trouble anybody. I didn’t expect this to happen to me,” he shared, adding that the incident has left him deeply traumatized.
Police investigations are ongoing, but residents are calling for stricter action to prevent repeat offenses by known individuals.
