Seven years after his sister died in a tragic accident, 41-year-old Zaman Ali lost his life in a similar fashion when his motorcar, HC 2918, slammed into a utility pole at Number 61 Village, Corentyne, on Thursday night.
Ali’s sister, 28-year-old Shabana Ali, died in 2017 under similar circumstances. She also lost control of her motorcar and crashed into a utility pole at Palmyra, Corentyne. In both incidents, the driver’s side of the vehicle sustained extensive damage, and they were the sole occupants at the time of the accidents.
In Zaman Ali’s case, the accident occurred at approximately 10:10 PM while he was driving south along the eastern lane of the Number 61 Public Road allegedly at a fast rate. He lost control of the vehicle and collided with a Guyana Power and Light (GPL) utility pole on the eastern side of the road.
The impact pinned Ali inside the wrecked car. Public-spirited citizens assisted in extracting him in an unconscious state. He was rushed to the Skeldon Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Ali’s grieving wife, 37-year-old Pooja Nowrang, shared her sorrow with The News Desk, recounting their final moments together. She said her husband had been working earlier that day and returned home briefly for lunch. Before leaving, he kissed their son and daughter goodbye, promising to return soon.
According to Nowrang, Ali informed her that he was going to Number 64 Village to have two beers with friends. She later received a call from one of his friend’s wives, informing her of the accident. “I don’t know what happened or how it happened,” she said tearfully. “I rushed to the hospital, but he was already unconscious.”
Her father, Rajesh Nowrang, who also visited the hospital, revealed that Ali sustained severe head injuries, broken bones, and other injuries across his body.
Zaman Ali was described as a loving husband and father who worked tirelessly to provide for his family. “He was the best father to his two young children,” his wife said, adding that his devotion to his family was unwavering.
Investigations into the fatal accident are ongoing.
