In a concerted effort to elevate the performance of local courts in alignment with global standards, the Supreme Court of Judicature inaugurated a comprehensive seven-year strategic plan on Tuesday, coinciding with the commencement of Law Year 2024.
The strategic plan encompasses a series of reforms and guidelines aimed at enhancing service delivery, with a strong emphasis on leveraging technology. Key objectives include the transition to a paperless operation, providing digital access to all, and augmenting human resources through improved management systems and enhanced client experiences.
Chancellor of the Judiciary (ag) Yonette Cummings Edwards, in her address at the launch, emphasized that the strategic plan is not a mere document but a transformative blueprint for the judicial system. She highlighted its potential to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and public trust in the justice system.
“The strategic plan and its management will help us meet our performance goals. It will help us be more efficient and effective in the work we do and the service we deliver,” stated Chancellor Cummings Edwards.
The plan aims to reshape the justice system into a more robust, efficient, and effective framework, fostering accountability and public trust. The Chancellor underscored the judiciary’s commitment to transparency by setting measurable targets and welcoming feedback from the public.
Delivering virtual remarks, President of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), Justice Adrian Saunders, commended the plan as a comprehensive assessment of the judiciary’s current state and its vision for the next seven years. Justice Saunders urged all judicial officers to use the plan as a daily guide in their actions.
“Court leadership has a responsibility to adopt appropriate performance measures, standards, and monitoring mechanisms to assist judicial officers and staff in carrying forward the goals of the strategic plan,” remarked Justice Saunders, offering CCJ’s readiness to provide support in implementing the plan.
Launched under the theme “Pursuing Service Excellence through Investments in Human Resources, Management Systems, and Technology,” the strategic plan signals a pivotal step towards modernizing judicial operations in Guyana.
