After more than a year on the run, 25-year-old Nicholas Johnson, called “Suga”, has surrendered to the police in connection with the February 2024 murder of Colene Toney at No. 53 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
Johnson, a labourer of Lot 90, No. 51 Village, Corentyne, was accompanied by his attorney when he turned himself in at the Criminal Investigation Department at the Springlands Police Station around 11:10 hrs on Tuesday, July 23, 2025. He was told of the allegation, arrested, and remains in police custody pending charges.
The incident dates back to the night of February 20, 2024, when 31-year-old Toney, also a labourer and resident of No. 53 Village, was fatally wounded following an altercation.

According to investigators, an eyewitness reported seeing Toney and the suspect engaged in an argument over a mobile phone around 23:00 hrs on the night of the incident. The confrontation escalated, and the suspect allegedly left the scene on a motorcycle shortly after. Moments later, the victim was discovered lying on the ground, bleeding profusely from what appeared to be stab wounds.
Toney was rushed to the Skeldon Public Hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
Following the killing, police launched a manhunt for Johnson, who was 24 years old at the time. Several individuals were interviewed during the early stages of the investigation, and useful information was obtained, but Johnson remained at large until his recent surrender.
Investigations are ongoing as police prepare to lay charges.
