A 15-year-old female pedestrian from Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, is in serious but stable condition after being struck by a motor lorry this morning at Grove, East Bank Demerara. The incident, captured on video and widely circulated, led to the immediate arrest of the 42-year-old male driver.
The accident occurred around 9:20 a.m. at the junction of Grove public road and Kaneville/Samatta Point main access road. According to reports, the lorry, bearing license plate #GXX 1162, was traveling south along the eastern lane of the Grove public road in a line of traffic. As it approached the Jimbo Bridge junction, the driver stopped behind another lorry to allow vehicles from the access road to merge onto the main road. Once the lorry in front moved, the driver of lorry #GXX 1162 began to move forward.
During this time, the teenage pedestrian, who had been standing on the eastern side of the road, began crossing from east to west in front of the lorry. Tragically, the left side of the vehicle collided with her, causing her to fall beneath it. She sustained multiple injuries, including a fractured hip.
Bystanders quickly came to the girl’s aid, helping to remove her from under the lorry. Emergency services were called, and a team of Emergency Medical Technicians arrived shortly afterward. They transported her to the Diamond Diagnostic Center, where she was examined by doctors and then referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. There, she underwent emergency surgery on her hip and was later admitted in serious but stable condition.
A breathalyzer test confirmed the driver had no alcohol in his system. He has been taken into custody at Grove Police Station, and the lorry has been impounded for examination by a License and Certifying Officer. Authorities are investigating the incident further as the community remains concerned about the teen’s recovery and the circumstances surrounding the accident.
