Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred around 12:20 hrs on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, on the Berbice River Bridge Access Road, East Canje, Berbice. The incident involved motor car #PSS 6725, owned by Khemchan Jairam of Lot 91 Shieldstown, West Bank Berbice, and driven by 21-year-old Clifton Smith, a provisional license holder.
The vehicle was carrying four passengers: Annalisa Smith, 19 (deceased); Marlyn Jones, 60; Odessa Smith, 49, all of Lot 248 Hope, East Coast Demerara, and Simon Gomes, 43, of Lot 145 5th Street, Albertown, Georgetown. The car also collided with a utility pole belonging to the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL).
Initial investigations suggest that the motor car was traveling west along the southern drive lane at a high speed when the driver lost control and crashed into the utility pole on the southern side of the road.
As a result of the collision, Annalisa Smith, who was seated in the rear left seat, sustained severe injuries. Public-spirited citizens assisted in removing her from the vehicle in an unconscious state, after which she was transported by ambulance to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. However, she was pronounced dead on arrival by Dr. Jhagru. Her body is currently at the hospital’s mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The other occupants of the vehicle are receiving treatment at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver, and no traces of alcohol were found.
Smith remains in police custody as investigations continue.
