Over 4,700 sugar workers from the three estates in Region Six began receiving their $100,000 cash grants earlier today as part of a nationwide distribution exercise. The activity commenced at 10:00 AM and will continue on Friday, bringing relief to workers ahead of the Christmas season.
Excitement filled the distribution sites, with many workers expressing gratitude and sharing plans for their grants. Some intend to invest in various ventures, while others view the funds as a timely boost for the holidays and the upcoming year.
Speaking with The News Desk, one worker expressed his appreciation for the initiative, highlighting its importance. “This came just in time for the holidays. It’s a good start for the new year because I won’t touch it now. I have plans to do some construction on my house, but I’ll wait for the rainy season to pass.” He also praised the government for implementing such a program, noting its positive impact on empowering Guyanese.
Shonell Winter, a weeder at the Rose Hall Estate in Canje, shared how she rushed back from Linden after hearing about the distribution. “This means a lot to me and my children. I plan to use it to support them when school reopens,” she said.
Another recipient, Rasheed Hussain, also expressed his gratitude, sharing that he plans to divide the grant among his children for the new year. “I don’t drink, so you done know. This will go towards something meaningful,” he added.
Meanwhile, Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha, attended the distribution at the Uitvlugt Estate, where over 1,300 sugar workers received their grants. He emphasized that this initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to improve the lives and well-being of citizens.
Sugar workers from other estates across the country also began receiving their grants today, marking a significant step in supporting the livelihoods of hardworking Guyanese.
