The firearm went missing on December 27, 2022, at a Gymkhana which was held in Reliance East Canje Berbice.
According to reports, at about 23 hours on the day in question, the police were patrolling the area in force motor vehicle PAB 3148 which was commanded by ASP Benn and driven by Constable Leacock when they stopped at the Gymkhana at Reliance.
Upon arrival at the event, the officers observed a male identified as Mark Codagon assaulting a male to his forehead with a drink case. That individual later turned out to be off duty police officer Tariq Mckalmon.
He told his colleagues that he was at the Gymkhana with friends when they were attacked by several males, and several beer bottles were also pelt in their direction. Mckalmon and a friend received injuries about their body and was escorted to the New Amsterdam public hospital where they were examined by a doctor and sent away.
However, on the same day, the men who attacked Mckalmon allegedly turned their attention to the police patrol where a confrontation occurred between the attackers and an armed officer.
The News Desk was told that the three dismissed officers were off duty at the time when they saw their on-duty colleagues being attacked and intervened. The firearm was handed over to one of the off-duty officers for safe keeping, but he too was attacked and misplaced the firearm.
Following an internal probe, a decision was taken to have the three officers who were off duty at the time dismissed.
So far a female has been charged in relation to the missing firearm.
