Three men were arrested this afternoon following an armed robbery at Ayan Supermarket in Unity, East Coast Demerara. The swift action by ranks from Regional Police Division 4’C’ led to the apprehension of the suspects shortly after the crime was committed.
At approximately 16:10 hrs, two of the suspects entered the supermarket while a third remained in the Toyota Axio car they arrived in, bearing registration number PAB 5491. One of the suspects brandished a firearm and pointed it at the cashier, while the other emptied the cash register, stealing an undisclosed sum of money before the group fled the scene in the car.
An alarm was quickly raised, and the ‘Ops’ room for Police Division 4’C’ was alerted. A police patrol unit, led by a Sergeant, spotted the suspect vehicle in Nabacalis and gave chase. The pursuit ended when the suspects’ car crashed into another vehicle. Fortunately, no one in the other vehicle was injured.
The police arrested the three men, identified as Anthon Fraser and Lushawn Crawford from Nabacalis, and Renardo Persaud from Coldigen. The suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue.
During the search of the vehicle, police recovered a 9mm Baretta pistol with a matching magazine and one .389 round of ammunition. Additionally, a total of $9,750 in cash, a haversack, a ski mask, and caps were found in their possession.
The police investigation is ongoing as authorities work to determine the full extent of the crime.
