Last night, the Guyana Fire Service was thrust into action as they responded to a devastating fire that engulfed Manager’s Quarters in Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice. The incident, which occurred at 10:17 p.m., resulted in the tragic loss of life and the destruction of multiple homes.
Upon receiving the alert, Water Tenders #74 and #78, along with seven firefighters led by Section Leader Mainty from the Rose Hall Fire Station, rushed to the scene. What awaited them was a chaotic inferno, with two buildings fully consumed by flames and thick smoke.
The primary structure at the heart of the blaze was a one-storey wooden and concrete house, owned by 43-year-old Asti Deoaarran of the United States and occupied by 43-year-old Tookant Deoaarran. Tragically, Tookant Deoaarran lost his life in the fire, and the building, along with its contents, was reduced to ashes.
Adjacent to the point of origin was a two-storey wooden and concrete house, the property of 75-year-old Ameena Bacchus. This structure, too, fell victim to the relentless flames, leaving the elderly woman homeless.
To combat the fire, three jets from Water Tenders #74 and #78 were deployed to douse the raging inferno. Despite their efforts, both houses were entirely destroyed by the merciless blaze.
The Guyana Fire Service extends heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Tookant Deoarran, who tragically lost his life in the calamity. Meanwhile, fire prevention officials have initiated a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the devastating blaze.
In the aftermath of this tragic event, citizens are reminded of the importance of fire safety measures. Authorities urge residents to equip their homes and businesses with essential fire safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and alarms, to mitigate the risks of similar incidents in the future. As the investigation unfolds, the community of Port Mourant grapples with the aftermath of a night that forever changed the lives of those affected.
