A devastating incident occurred on Saturday night, resulting in the alleged murder of Mark Hilliman, a 25-year-old laborer from Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara. The incident unfolded around 22:00 hrs in the vicinity of Longden and Croal Streets, Georgetown, and is currently under investigation by the Georgetown Police.
The suspect, an as-yet-unidentified male armed with a knife, is the primary focus of the investigation.
According to the preliminary police report, events began around 21:35 hrs on Saturday night when the victim’s reputed 28-year-old wife, employed at the KFC outlet on Water Street, was on duty. During her shift, the suspect, who was not known to her, entered the KFC outlet and started interfering with her.
Mark Hilliman, the victim, visited the KFC outlet to see his wife and, upon observing the situation, confronted the suspect, instructing him to cease interfering with his spouse. A heated argument ensued between the two individuals, both armed with knives. Subsequently, they left the KFC building and headed east between Longden and Croal Street. It was during this confrontation that the suspect allegedly stabbed Mark Hilliman on his left side of the chest with the knife he possessed.
After being stabbed, the victim walked a short distance before collapsing to the ground. The suspect, on the other hand, fled on foot in a southern direction, carrying the knife with him.
Public-spirited citizens came to the aid of Mark Hilliman and transported him to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by Doctor Joseph. The victim’s body currently resides at the GPHC’s Mortuary, awaiting a Post-Mortem Examination (PME).
As part of the ongoing investigation, authorities have interviewed several individuals, and CCTV cameras in the area are being reviewed by investigators. Despite efforts to locate the suspect, he remains at large, and the investigation continues.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety and conflict resolution in public spaces, as the community mourns the loss of a young life.
