The usually peaceful Port Mourant Market descended into chaos this morning as two armed bandits targeted a goldsmith’s stall in a brazen robbery, sending shockwaves through the community. The News Desk has learned that the incident left one bandit dead after being apprehended by public spirited citizens, while another remains at large.
The robbery took place around 9:30 a.m. when 31-year-old Daniel Dass, a goldsmith from Tain, Port Mourant, was preparing for his daily sales. Dass recalled the moment when one of the bandits charged at his employee, striking him repeatedly with a cutlass.
As Dass attempted to assist, he was confronted by a second assailant armed with a shotgun. The bandit struck Dass in the face with the firearm, momentarily incapacitating him as the first attacker entered the stall and began removing jewelry from the display cases.
The ordeal lasted less than three minutes, but the two bandits were able to flee with a bag of stolen valuables through a back exit of the market. However, their escape was not without incident as several vendors and shoppers, alarmed by the commotion, gave chase.
Dass later confirmed that his stolen items were recovered by a group of individuals. “Some boys brought back the bag with everything that was stolen,” Dass shared with The News Desk.
One of the bandits was apprehended by citizens and later found on a dam near the market. Police arrived and transported the injured suspect to the Port Mourant Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been confirmed.
The second suspect, reportedly injured during the pursuit, managed to escape. Witnesses claimed that during his escape, the bandit fired two shots, injuring a passerby in both legs. The injured man took self discharge after receiving medical treatment, while police continue to search for the remaining fugitive.
