A 17-year-old from Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, has been charged with “Attempt to Commit Murder” following a stabbing incident involving another 17-year-old on October 3, 2024. The juvenile appeared before Magistrate Alisha George at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court on Friday to answer to the charge, which falls under Section 103(c) of the Criminal Law Offences Act, Chapter 8:01.
The accused was not required to plead and has been remanded to the Juvenile Holding Centre until the case’s continuation on November 28, 2024.
The charge stems from a police investigation into the alleged unlawful wounding of the victim, also from Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo. The incident occurred at around 10:30 p.m. on October 3 at Second Street, Tuschen New Scheme. According to the police, the victim reported that the charged juvenile and another suspect stabbed him multiple times during an attack.
Enquiries revealed that the victim and the suspects were acquainted. On the night of the incident, the victim and the two suspects were traveling together in a minibus. Upon arriving at Tuschen New Scheme, the victim exited the bus, followed by the suspects, who reportedly chased him. The victim sought refuge by jumping into a yard, but the suspects allegedly followed and inflicted multiple stab wounds before fleeing the scene.
The critically injured victim was rushed to Leonora Cottage Hospital, where medical staff stabilized him before transferring him to the West Demerara Regional Hospital. He remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Meanwhile, the second suspect was arrested but has since been released on $200,000 bail. A file has been sent for further legal advice. The second suspect denied any involvement, with his account supported by the charged juvenile, who claimed to have acted alone. However, the victim insists that both suspects participated in the attack.
The case remains under investigation as authorities gather more evidence and await further legal direction.
