Member of Parliament Zamal Hussain, during a community engagement with residents of Betsy Ground, East Canje Berbice, on Tuesday, reminded those gathered that the Government has made significant investments in the area, from the desilting of drains to the construction of new roads, among other initiatives.
He assured residents that “we will continue to work for you” as he introduced the newly elected Regional Chairman, Junior Basant, and Regional Vice Chairman, Wajid Saheed Khan, describing them as young leaders with the experience and drive needed to get the job done and meet the needs of every resident.
The Member of Parliament reaffirmed that “Canje will not be left out,” emphasizing that several concerns raised previously by residents of Betsy Ground have already been addressed. He further gave the assurance that the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) and the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) will continue to work together to ensure that the remaining issues are resolved.

Speaking on the renewed economic activity in the area, MP Hussain noted that life has been brought back to Canje with the reopening of the Rose Hall Estate. He remarked, “You can’t drive this road from Cumberland to Gangaram at 8 o’clock in the night—it’s too busy. Why? Because the engine of Canje is the Rose Hall Estate, and the Minister of Agriculture along with His Excellency, the President, ensured that we invested to get the estate up and running.”
He also spoke of the recent developments in New Forest, where residents received electricity for the first time earlier this year, a move that has inspired many to return to the community. Additionally, he mentioned that a new dumpster facility was established in Gangaram, further improving the community’s infrastructure and cleanliness.
