Tragedy struck in Lovely Lass Village when 21-year-old Claymont Doris, a contractor and resident of the area, was fatally electrocuted while using an angle grinder on Wednesday, November 6, 2024. The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. at his home at Lot 79, Lovely Lass Village.
According to a statement from Doris’s girlfriend, Carlica Craig, the couple returned home from an outing around noon. Shortly after, Doris took an angle grinder to work on steel in the yard. Craig briefly left for a nearby shop and, upon her return, found him unresponsive on the ground with the angle grinder resting on his chest. The tool was visibly damaged, with exposed wiring, raising suspicions of electrocution. Burn marks on the left side of Doris’s chest supported this hypothesis.
Craig immediately raised the alarm, and Doris’s cousin, Marvin McCurdy, who is also a police officer, assisted in transporting him to Fort Wellington Public Hospital. Unfortunately, Doris was pronounced dead on arrival. The police, who were notified at approximately 12:40 p.m., promptly processed the scene, where they documented the damaged angle grinder and other evidence related to the incident.
A post-mortem examination was conducted on Thursday, November 7, by Government Pathologist Dr. V. Brijmohan at Anthony’s Funeral Home. Doris’s body was identified by his brother, Police Officer Clement Jr. Doris. Following a detailed examination, Dr. Brijmohan confirmed that Doris’s cause of death was due to fibrillation caused by electrocution.
The body has since been released to Doris’s family, and funeral arrangements are pending. This incident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers associated with electrical tools, especially those with damaged components.
