Investigation is underway into a fatal accident that claimed the life of a 25-year-old truck driver on Friday, April 11, 2025, around 15:00 hrs along the ungazetted section of the Linden to Mabura Road.
The deceased has been identified as Mervin Williams, a Guyanese of Amerindian descent. He was the driver of motor lorry #GYY 815, which is owned by Rohit Persaud of Lot 1A Area B, Industry, East Coast Demerara. The lone passenger on board was 24-year-old Deon Wilson, a porter and resident of Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
Initial investigations revealed that the vehicle was traveling south at an allegedly high rate of speed along the eastern drive lane of the road, which was wet and slippery due to earlier rainfall. Upon approaching a left bend, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which began sliding before flipping onto its left side and pinning Williams underneath.
Another lorry passing by stopped and assisted in pulling the vehicle off the driver’s body. Wilson, who was seated on the right passenger side, sustained only minor injuries. He was picked up in a conscious state by public-spirited citizens and transported to the Linden Hospital Complex, where he was treated and later discharged.
Williams, however, was removed in an unconscious state by police and taken to the same hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.
His body has since been taken to the Pensioner’s Mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
Investigations into the tragic incident are ongoing.
