Essequibo Coast, Guyana – Regional Division Number Two police officers are actively investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred at around 00:30 hrs last Sunday on the public road at Walton Hall, Essequibo Coast. The incident involved a motorcar bearing license plate PGG 8477, registered to and driven by a 23-year-old Farmer from Siriki, Pomeroon River, and a pedestrian named Andrew Murray, also 23, from Lot 18 Jib, Essequibo Coast, who tragically lost his life.
The incident came to light when concerned members of the public reported an unidentified male lying motionless in a trench on the northern side of the public road. Upon arrival at the scene, police officers discovered pieces of a broken number plate scattered on the ground. Ingeniously, they assembled these fragments and were able to identify the vehicle involved.
Yesterday, around 16:00 hrs, police officers on duty in a Force motorcar on the La Union Public Road, Essequibo Coast, spotted the suspected motorcar within a yard. The driver, upon questioning, recounted that he had been driving motorcar PGG 8477 in an easterly direction on the northern driving lane of the same public road. He reported feeling an impact on the left side front portion of his car, prompting him to come to a stop. He stated that he exited his vehicle to investigate but did not find anything or anyone.
Following this, he returned to his motorcar and drove to his residence. The police subsequently arrested the driver after cautioning him and escorted him to the Anna Regina Police Station. Additionally, the motorcar was impounded at the station for examination by a Licensing and Certifying Officer.
Investigations into this hit-and-run case are currently underway, as authorities seek to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
