An elderly couple from Caracas, West Canje, Berbice, can finally rest easy, knowing they no longer have to fear their home collapsing around them. Thanks to the Men On Mission (MoM) initiative, Mohamed Hassan Ramdular, 62, and his wife, Fazeeroon Ramdular, 56, now have a brand new, fully furnished home to call their own.
The couple’s new beginning was marked by a heartfelt ceremony this afternoon, where the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha, officially handed over the house to the Ramdulars. Regional Vice Chairman Zamal Hussain, along with family and friends of the beneficiaries, were also present, witnessing the moment that brought both relief and joy to the Ramdular family.
For Fazeeroon, this moment was a dream come true. Overwhelmed with emotion, she reflected on the many hardships she and her husband endured while living in their deteriorating home. “I faced a lot of challenges,” Fazeeroon tearfully shared, recalling the many days she had to endure the rainwater pouring through their leaking roof.
“Many times I had to bathe in the yard, and I would visit the masjid just to use the washroom.” With no means to repair the crumbling structure, the couple’s home became a place of despair instead of comfort.
Now, standing in front of her new home, Fazeeroon expressed her gratitude for the life-changing gift. “With this new home, life will be different. I don’t have to hurt my head about anything. I must thank my family for allowing us to build here and thank the people responsible for building this house for us.”
Her husband, Mohamed, echoed her gratitude. Once a cane harvester at the Estate, Mohamed had been the sole breadwinner until a complication with his legs left him wheelchair-bound and unable to work. With their financial situation worsening, they relied on the support of family to get by. “I can’t work, I can’t move about much. It’s just from this wheelchair to the upstairs and to the bed. That’s my life now,” Mohamed shared, his voice heavy with emotion. “I’m very happy and thankful for what they’ve done for me here.”
The Men On Mission initiative, conceptualized by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, was praised by Minister Mustapha as a lifeline for vulnerable groups across the country. He emphasized that the initiative not only builds homes but restores hope, dignity, and security for families facing some of life’s toughest challenges.
