In a testament to the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) government’s commitment to nationwide infrastructural development, His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali announced significant investments in road projects during a ceremony for the Mackenzie-Wismar Bridge contract signing in Linden.
President Ali highlighted the substantial investment of over $2 billion in the rehabilitation of hinterland roads in Region Six within a three-year period, a stark contrast to the opposition’s lack of investment in the same for five years. Additionally, the government’s commitment to urban road rehabilitation was evident with an impressive $3 billion investment over three years, dwarfing the opposition’s expenditure of $289 million in five years.
The President emphasized the impact of the 2018 no-confidence motion on the opposition’s performance, revealing that no urban road projects were executed in 2015 and 2016. However, following the motion, eight urban roads were rehabilitated in 2017. President Ali criticized the opposition for providing minimal investment until closer to the elections, stating that 85 percent of their spending came after the no-confidence motion.
Turning attention to Region Six, the government continued its commitment to infrastructure development, injecting billions into road projects to enhance connectivity and foster economic growth. A significant portion of this investment, totaling $1.7 billion, was allocated to rehabilitating Farm to Market access roads, uncovering thousands of acres of land. This initiative aligns with the government’s goal to boost the agriculture sector and improve the lives of residents and farmers in the region.
Furthermore, an impressive $27 billion was dedicated to rehabilitating miscellaneous and urban roads in Region Six, showcasing the government’s strides in fulfilling its 2020-2025 manifesto commitment. The investments not only address crucial transportation needs but also contribute to the overall development and prosperity of these regions.
