The National Drainage & Irrigation Authority (NDIA) through the Ministry of Agriculture has embarked on a series of desilting and cleaning of canals within the entire Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) catchment of East Canje Berbice.
The areas where the main interlock canals, internal canals/drains are being cleaned currently are:
-Gangaram
-Adelphi
-Betsy Ground
-Canefield (The main trench)
-Reliance Settlement
-Reliance Abandon
-Canefield West (Small drains)
-New Forest (Trench located near the road shoulders)
Residents in these locations and others had made a request to President Irfaan Ali and Minister Zulfikar Mustapha to have the drainage system desilted with the intention of restoring these canals and drains to its natural capacity to facilitate proper irrigation.
These works are expected to also assist greatly in the hydraulic performance of these said waterways/passages, a promise fullfilled throught the intervention of the Government of Guyana.
The works commenced approximately a month ago and will continue until all are complete and up to the standard required. The NDC along with NDIA engineers and the regional administration have been monitoring the progress of the exercise which will ultimately benefit residents within the areas.
