Students from remote communities in Region Three now have an easier educational journey as two dormitories, with a total cost of $75 million, have been commissioned at the Leonora Secondary School. Currently, 23 students are residing in these dormitories.
The male and female dormitories are equipped with fire prevention tools and other essential amenities. Two dorm parents are present to oversee the facilities.
During the commissioning ceremony, Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand emphasized the importance of dormitories in providing comfortable accommodations for students. She noted that these dormitories enable children who previously couldn’t access secondary education or had to travel long distances to now attend the Leonora Secondary School, making it more convenient for them and their parents. Many parents were reluctant to send their children far away to access education.
The beneficiaries of the dorms at Leonora include students from various communities in the region, such as Saxacalli, Aliki, Caria Caria, Lanaballi, Upper and Lower Bonasika, Santa Mission, Sand Hills, and Hogg Island.
Minister Manickchand mentioned that dormitories are available at several other secondary schools across different regions in Guyana. These dormitories play a crucial role in ensuring that children from smaller communities without their secondary schools have access to quality education.
Regional Chairman Sheik Ayube also highlighted the strategic location of the dormitories at Leonora, making them easily accessible to parents and conveniently situated near essential services like hospitals, fire stations, and police stations.
