Moot Court Guyana (MCG), a student-led organization within the University of Guyana’s Department of Law, launched its International Law Mooting Competition, marking the first mooting event of the 2024/2025 academic year on Friday.
MCG is dedicated to enhancing the advocacy skills of the Bachelor of Law students through various platforms, including debates, impromptu speaking competitions, and mooting challenges.
The participants of the International Law Mooting Competition were presented with a moot scenario touching on complex international law issues, including dispute resolution under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), international humanitarian and human rights law, as well as questions of public international law like immunity. The scenario was expertly crafted by Mr. Neville Bissember, a Lecturer in UG’s Department of Law.
Six teams competed in three rounds, displaying exceptional legal reasoning and oratory skills. Team 2, comprising Fabian Green (Senior Counsel), Juneeda Jeffers (Junior Counsel), and Raheem Blair (Researcher), claimed victory with a score of 83.5 points out of 100. Close behind was Team 1, consisting of Shamar Sukhu (Senior Counsel), John Applewhite-Hercules (Junior Counsel), and Anelia Bacchus (Researcher), which secured second place with 78.5 points.

In a standout performance, Juneeda Jeffers was named the overall Best Advocate for her exceptional advocacy skills.
The two top teams will face off in the final round of the International Law Mooting Competition, scheduled for Friday, 25th October 2024.
At the end of competition, Justice Peter Hugh, who judged the competition, commended the participants for their courage and commitment to honing their advocacy skills. His remarks highlighted the importance of such competitions in preparing the next generation of legal professionals.
