During his featured address at the Canada-Guyana Chamber of Commerce Maple Leaf Ball and Awards presentation, President Dr. Irfaan Ali emphasized the Caribbean region’s status as a “mecca” for sports and entertainment. He underscored the need for repositioning to thrive in an ever-changing world.
President Ali stressed the importance of building competitive products and fostering a robust regional environment, country by country and island by island. He identified the chamber as a key player in achieving this goal.
In the context of Guyana, the President expressed his commitment to creating an environment that offers the best opportunities for local athletes to reach their full potential. This commitment was articulated during the Vigilance Sports Ground Enhancement Programme ceremony last year.
The President outlined plans to establish a national athlete academy, providing athletes with proper nutrition, top-notch training facilities, and an ideal environment to excel and make history for Guyana. Investments will be made to support this initiative.
Additionally, the government has prioritized sports infrastructure development, focusing on improvements to multiple community center grounds. The Vigilance Sports Ground Enhancement Programme includes the construction of a new bridge, bleachers, restroom facilities, ground improvements, building renovations, and the addition of four floodlights for night use. This project was a collaborative effort involving the Office of the President, ExxonMobil, and Cerulean Incorporated.
